In 1968, the women of First Presbyterian Church established a thrift shop known as the Bargain Box. It was, and remains, dedicated to providing families of Garland County with clean and usable items of clothing and housewares at affordable prices. The proceeds of all sales remain in Garland County and are used to assist families in need of essential items and to assist various county agencies that provide similar assistance. Local ministries that received assistance from Bargain Box proceeds during 2008 include numerous family assists (food, energy, rent, water), the “Winter Coats for Kids” (142 coats) drive, the Garland County Habitat for Humanity, Jackson House, the Charitable Christian Medical Clinic, Samaritan Ministries, The Master’s Table, the Literacy Council of Garland County, student support for the Arkansas School For Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, The Caring Place and numerous other ministries in Garland County.
